This is the final issue of SixtySeconds, following a decision to consolidate Education Services Australia’s communication services. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and contributions over the many years. In bringing SixtySeconds to you we hope we have been able to keep you informed about research and trends in education as we, together, embraced ICT in education and in our daily lives.

edna is to be decommissioned commencing 30 June 2011

The decommissioning of edna will commence on 30 June 2011, and be completed on 30 September 2011. This decision is the outcome of a recent review.
The edna website and most associated services will cease, including: news headlines, newsletters, news RSS feeds, resources, theme pages, search and browse functions and associated RSS feeds, event listings, schools calendar and event RSS feeds.
The edna Groups and Lists will continue to be available and will be transitioned to a new Education Services Australia branded service by 30 September 2011. Users of Groups and Lists services will be kept informed of any changes as they occur. Your group or list will continue to be supported

2011 myfuture Video Competition |

The 2011 myfuture Video Competition was launched on 1 June 2011! The competition is an opportunity for young people to explore occupations in a creative and innovative way, by creating a short video. There are two categories – Best School Video and Best Youth Video, with a $10,000 prize for the winning entry in each category. Competition closes on 31 October 2011. This project is funded by the Australian Government.

Produced by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework (Framework), the resource outlines the results of research looking at sustaining e-learning innovations, which identifies what Australian organisations are doing to build e-learning into how they deliver training now and in the future.

Social networking sites and our lives

Questions have been raised about the social impact of widespread use of social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Twitter. Do these technologies isolate people and truncate their relationships? Or are there benefits associated with being connected to others in this way?
This Pew Research Center report finds that people who are already likely to have large overall social networks – those with more years of education – gravitate to specific social networking sites, such as LinkedIn and Twitter.

Year 12 completion and youth transitions
|

On average, young people who complete Year 12 tend to have more successful transitions from education to work than those who do not.
This paper investigates labour market outcomes for a range of different pathways undertaken by young people. Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) have been used to show that completion of senior secondary schooling provides the best labour market outcomes, relative to other vocational education paths.

This publication estimates the course completion rates of publicly funded VET courses in Australia, in order to fill a gap in performance measures for the VET sector. Completion rates for qualifications commenced in 2005-2007 are given for various groups, including by qualification level, field of education and by state.

Waiting for Gonski - What the 2011 Commonwealth Budget means for schools

The need for a fundamental overhaul of federal schools funding arrangements has been confirmed by new research that shows without it public schools face a real cut of over $300 million in three years’ time. The report on the 2011/12 Budget asserts that while public school funding will reach a high point in the next financial year, it is then projected to decline significantly in real terms.
